Our comprehensive range of boutique wines has something to suit any budget and taste! We source and import all our wines directly from small, independent, quality focussed producers ensuring maximum enjoyment on your wedding day. Our wines won’t be found in any office licences or supermarkets, giving you something handpicked and unique. We’re more than happy to aid and advise you in your selection, so you can make the best possible choice of wines that are perfectly suited to your special day.

Does your venue allow you to supply your own wine for your wedding? If so, let’s go about getting you the best possible value for money!

Most venues that allow you to bring your own wine will charge a corkage fee. But what exactly is corkage? Corkage is a fee that a restaurant or venue will charge you for handling and serving wine you have brought onto the premises. That being said, there is no standard corkage rate in Ireland with it varying greatly from venue to venue. It can range from between €7 to €20 per bottle of still wine, and can go as high as €30 per bottle for Champagne and sparkling wine. As there’s no standard rate, make sure that you negotiate with your venue!

For most weddings, people generally choose the ‘house’ or package red, white and sparkling offered by a venue. ‘House’ wines are often inexpensive wines that are then sold at a very high mark up. It’s very possible that you could find a wine selling at €30 a bottle at a venue that is available in a shop at €10-€12.

In choosing your wedding wines with Wines Direct, you are guaranteed better quality wines for your money that have been specially chosen for your special day. Say you spend €15 per bottle with ourselves getting a much higher quality wine and then even with a €10 corkage charge, you are only spending €25 per bottle for the day. A better quality wine at much better value than the venue’s prices. We also offer a discount on wedding orders to further ensure you get the best quality wines for the best price.

Personalised Wedding Tasting

You could take us at our word about how good our wines are, but we’d rather you taste the difference! Get in touch with us to organise your own personalised wedding tasting based on your tastes, wants, and needs. With a wealth of experience in food and wine pairing (as seen in our involvement with TV3’s ‘The Restaurant’) we can offer up a selection of wines to pair perfectly with your menu. You’re also more than welcome to bring up to four other members of your wedding party to get the opinions of your nearest and dearest, so you have maximum peace of mind and reassurance over your selections.

How much do you need?

For wine being served with your meal, we recommend catering for half a bottle per person. On average the standard wine bottle holds roughly 5 glasses (150ml per glass) of wine, so about 2.5 glasses per person. Keep in mind there will be people attending who won’t drink any wine, but there will also be those who will gladly make up for them. As such, for a wedding of 100 people we would recommend 50 bottles of wine.

When it comes to bubbles, a standard sized bottle will give you 6 glasses or flutes. If you’re having a sparkling reception, we would recommend allocating 2 glasses per person. For toasts, add another glass per guest.

If you’re worried about running out, don’t fret. We have the option for sale and return, so you can always play it safe – ordering a little more initially and returning any unopened bottles for a refund. An extra case as a buffer is an easy way to put your mind at ease.

The Ratio of Red vs White.

In our experience, the breakdown between red and white has always favoured red with the majority of weddings that we have looked after, with a split being roughly 60% red and 40% white. That being said, there are factors that can influence your decision including your specific menu, personal preference and the preferences of your guests, and the time of year. Traditionally people will drink more red during the winter and white during the summer although in July and August you can also consider a rose. To allay any fear of running out early, you can also make use of our sale and return policy by adding a little extra, knowing that you can return any unopened bottles to us.

You will have enough tasks to get through in the days leading up to your wedding day, so allow us to take care of one of them for you! As part of our wedding wine service we offer free delivery on all wedding orders (Free delivery within the Republic of Ireland only). As we appreciate it is a stressful time for you, we can have the wine delivered to your venue up to three days before the reception to take as much pressure off you as possible.
